Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) will play a major role in this project as the Indian co-ordinating institute. IIT Kharagpur, established as the first Indian Institute of Technology back in May 1950 is one of the premier institutes of technology in India (DST national ranking three as a research institute for the period of 2002-2014). School of Environmental Science and Engineering is set-up in the institute since last 5 years, which has excellent in-house state of the art facilities for research and industrial consultancy. Various reputed faculties are attached with the school and have rendered years of service to the nation. Innovative technologies and research deliverables in terms of sustainable application for the mass is the prime objective. The school is actively participating in the programmes of National interest. Mega projects such as the ‘National Mission for Clean Ganga’, ‘Smart Cities Mission’ to name a few are the projects to which the school has continual contribution.
Role in the project
On the basis of the gathered expertise from past experience to handle large projects both in arenas of research and industrial consultancy, IIT KGP will lead the WP2 on design, execution and operation of the state-of-the art pilot plants for decentralised wastewater and sludge treatment. IIT KGP will also contribute to WP 3, 4, 5 and 6 through specific inputs as required and overall coordination as the Indian co-ordinator. Considering the expertise available with Co-PIs, they will be contributing in the work packages on life cycle assessment and Socio-economic evaluation.
