National Institute for Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, India

National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) was established by the Government of India in 1963. NITIE is a post graduate institute and has 60 faculty members and 1000 students (all first class engineers). NITIE is dedicated to helping Indian businesses to make their presence felt globally. It aims to act as driving force not only in manufacturing sector but all dynamic sectors of the Indian economy. It has aligned its vision and activities in line with the current and future needs of the Indian economy and its vibrant and growing sectors. The institute offers full-time Post Graduate programs in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Management, Industrial Safety and Environmental management. NITIE conducts training programmes for industry on a continuous basis throughout the year. It has signed 25 MoUs in recent years with international and national institutes, and several Indian Industries. Environmental considerations are becoming an integral part of core business planning today. Environmental Engineering and management group of NITIE provides the much-needed skills business needs. The group has a strong research focus. It has dedicated faculty interacting with industry to provide insights in several areas including waste management. NITIE took the lead and created for the first time in India, Industrial Safety and Environmental management program in 2000 which is a unique program fulfilling the needs of the industry in the best possible manner. The programme incorporates safety, social and environmental stewardship issues of today’s industry. Centre for Environmental Studies was also established with a clear focus on research initiated in November 2009. The objectives of the centre were to carry out research in the areas of ecosystems management, business and sustainability development and environmental policy making in Phase I and II. Research facilities including laboratories exist with the centre. Several faculty members, NITIE students, staff and students from other institutes are involved in research work.

Role in the project

On the basis of the expertise gained through handling number of projects in the areas of research and consultancy based projects for industries, NITIE will lead the WP5 on sustainability from Indian side. Further it will co-lead the pilots 4 and 9 from Indian side in WP2 and WP3.
